The E.T Davies project is the brainchild of Mr Neville John, a retired Merthyr schoolteacher who is deeply concerned regarding the total absence of any public recognition for Evan Thomas Davies, a gifted musician born at 41 Pontmorlais, Merthyr Tydfil in 1878.
Canolfan Soar in Pontmorlais, Merthyr would be an ideal location for a plaque to him to be erected in ET’s honour as it is situated very close to ET’s birthplace and to the chapel where ET was organist for thirteen years. Mr John approached the management and they agreed to participate. He then recruited the following highly qualified members of a committee who have met regularly for the past twelve months:
- Professor E Wyn James
- Dr T William Reynolds
- Mr T Ieuan Jones
- Miss Emma Saunders
- Miss Debra Williams
- Miss Bethan Thomas
- Mr Alex Stephens
- Mr Richard Knight
- Mr Richard Davies
- Mr Huw Williams
Dr Richard Elfyn Jones, an authority on E.T. Davies agreed to follow the plaque unveiling with a lecture on the life of E.T. Davies.
On retirement from Bangor University in 1943, E.T. Davies moved to Aberdare (his wife’s home town) and lived there until his death in 1969.
A plaque will be unveiled at Canolfan Soar followed by a lecture on Thursday October 1st 2015 at 7pm. Free admission.
